In Dubai, UAE, near the iconic Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest man-made structure, a gathering of Pakistanis experienced disappointment as their national flag failed to adorn the building. On August 14, Pakistan's Independence Day, a multitude of Pakistani tourists had gathered at the site, hopeful that the Burj Khalifa would illuminate with their country's flag.
Over time, Burj Khalifa has gained fame for its splendid light displays during significant occasions. In a widely circulated video on social media, a woman can be heard describing the situation as a 'prank' on the Pakistanis, as the iconic tower remained devoid of the green, white, and crescent moon elements that comprise the Pakistani flag.
The video captures the anticipation of Pakistani nationals as they waited, breathless, for the flag's appearance. However, much to their dismay, the flag failed to materialize, even as midnight came and went.
"It's now 12:01 am, and Dubai officials have conveyed that Pakistan's national flag won't grace Burj Khalifa. This is now our reality. Despite the slogans raised by Pakistanis here, the flag won't adorn Burj Khalifa. It's truly disheartening; a prank has been played on Pakistanis," the woman's voice can be heard expressing.
Viewers of the video offered a range of opinions, with some finding amusement in the situation, while others criticized the perceived need for validation sought by some.
"I'm genuinely impressed by her candor," remarked one user, while another added, "Pakistanis in Dubai felt let down as the Burj Khalifa didn't display the Pakistani flag on Independence Day. But does projecting the flag onto Burj Khalifa really alter anything? People on both sides of the border seem to view displaying something on Burj Khalifa and Times Square as a significant achievement."
Pakistani Flag Eventually Displayed
Notably, only after the video went viral did the Pakistani flag finally grace the building. Late on August 14, the Instagram page of Burj Khalifa shared a video featuring the building adorned with the Pakistan flag.
"#BurjKhalifa lights up to celebrate The Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s Independence Day. Wishing the people of Pakistan a day filled with pride, unity, and prosperity as you celebrate the rich heritage and achievements of your great nation. May the future hold even greater success and happiness for all Pakistanis. Happy Independence Day!" read the video's caption.
Pakistan emerged as a new and independent nation following the partition of India after the departure of British imperial rule. While Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day on August 14, India observes it a day later, on August 15.
